John D Campbell QC FCIArb

John Campbell was called to the Bar in 1981, joined the English Bar in 1990, took silk in 1998 and has practised throughout the UK for 28 years. He is a registered Construction Adjudicator, accredited Mediator and was the elected President of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators for 2009.

John has conducted commercial, criminal, personal injury and divorce litigation, has worked in the public service in Hong Kong, and has been a Magistrate there. Since 1994, he has focussed mainly on property, land law, agricultural, planning and commercial disputes in Scotland, specialising in:

  • Town and country planning
  • Public inquiries
  • Commercial arbitration
  • Alternative dispute resolution

He has conducted cases in courts of first instance, courts-martial, employment and other tribunals, appeal courts and in the House of Lords. He has appeared on behalf of planning authorities, developers, third party objectors, accused persons, claimants, and defenders in courts and at public inquiries. John has appeared in over 200 planning inquiries and was Counsel to the Holyrood Inquiry in 2004/2005. Recent cases and matters have included:-

  • Professional negligence disputes
  • Land use, planning and compensation cases
  • Residential, agricultural and commercial property issues
  • Urban and rural heritage; landscape designations and master planning

  • Retail developments, including supermarkets, and retail parks
  • Waste management, minerals extraction
  • Recreation and leisure projects.

In addition, John Campbell is the author of ‘Listed Buidings, Conservation Areas, etc’ in the Scottish Planning Encyclopaedia (W. Green & Son). He is the Chairman of a Building Preservation Trust and Edinburgh University’s Research Project in Speckled Computing.
